This charming capital is at the geographical, cultural, economical and political heart of Slovenia. Ljubljana is a green city of bridges, dominated by a majestic hilltop castle. Its spirit is unique, a blend of traditional and modern, very Slovenian, but full of international influences. Streets and squares are lively, with numerous street cafés, restaurants and bars. A stroll through the old town or along the Ljubljanica River reminds visitors of Paris or Prague, but without the crowds. Major influences in architecture are from Baroque and Art Nouveau, with the most important contribution made by Jože Plečnik, who is responsible for such masterpieces as Tromostovje (three bridges).
